How to make a Wi-Fi QR code
- Enter the network name (SSID) exactly as it appears in your Wi-Fi list — capitals and spaces matter.
- Choose the security type (almost always WPA/WPA2/WPA3) and type the password.
- Download the PNG and print it, or show it on a screen.
- Test it: open your phone's camera, point it at the code and tap Join network.
Where to find your network name and password
- On a sticker on the back or bottom of your router (often labelled SSID and WPA key).
- On a Windows PC that is connected: Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi → (your network) → View Wi-Fi security key.
- On an iPhone that is connected: Settings → Wi-Fi → ⓘ next to the network → Password.
- On Android: Settings → Network → Wi-Fi → (your network) → Share shows the password, and often a QR code too.
Which security type?
Choose WPA / WPA2 / WPA3 for practically every home and business network. WEP is only for very old routers. Choose None for open networks without a password, such as some guest networks. Tick Hidden network if your network does not appear in the list of available networks.
Tips for cafés, offices and rentals
- Use a separate guest network, so visitors can't see your own devices.
- Print the network name and password under the code as well, for laptops without a camera.
- Changed the password? Make a new code — the old one stops working.
- Laminate the card or choose High error correction if it may get dirty or wet.
Your password stays private
Online generators that upload your Wi-Fi password could store it. Here the code is created in your browser: the password is never sent anywhere. Keep in mind that anyone who scans the printed code can join, so place it where only guests can see it.
Frequently asked questions
Does a Wi-Fi QR code work on iPhone?
Yes. Since iOS 11 the iPhone camera recognises Wi-Fi QR codes and offers to join the network.
Does it work on Android?
Yes. The camera app or Google Lens reads Wi-Fi QR codes on all recent Android phones.
Is my Wi-Fi password safe?
The code is generated in your browser and the password is never uploaded. Anyone who scans the printed code can join, so use a guest network for public places.
What if I change my Wi-Fi password?
The old code stops working. Enter the new password and print a new code.
Does it work for hidden networks?
Yes. Tick Hidden network so phones know to look for it.
Can laptops use the code?
Laptops usually have no QR scanner, so print the network name and password next to the code as well.
