How to move a CapCut project to Final Cut Pro
CapCut on Windows
Final Cut Pro only runs on a Mac, but you can convert a project you edited in CapCut for Windows and continue on your Mac:
- Close CapCut, press Windows + R, paste
%LOCALAPPDATA%\CapCut\User Data\Projects\com.lveditor.draftand press Enter. - Drag your project's folder onto the box above (in Chrome or Edge on the PC).
- Copy your footage to the Mac (USB drive, AirDrop from an iPhone, or a cloud folder). Note the folder it ends up in, for example
/Users/you/Movies/My project. - Back on this page, open Media locations and enter that Mac folder under My video files are now in this folder, then click Download for Final Cut Pro.
- Copy the
.fcpxmlto the Mac and choose File → Import → XML… in Final Cut Pro. Clips that still show as missing: File → Relink Files….
CapCut on a Mac
- Quit CapCut, then in Finder press ⇧⌘G and go to
~/Movies/CapCut/User Data/Projects/com.lveditor.draft. - Drag your project's folder onto the box above. Final Cut Pro is already selected.
- Click Download for Final Cut Pro.
- In Final Cut Pro choose File → Import → XML… and select the
.fcpxml.
From CapCut to the magnetic timeline
FCPXML is Final Cut Pro's own exchange format, so the conversion maps naturally: CapCut's main video track becomes the primary storyline, overlay tracks become connected clips above it, and music and voice-overs become connected audio below it. Gaps stay gaps, and the result is exactly as long as your CapCut video.
What is carried over
| In CapCut | In your editor |
|---|---|
| Cuts, trims and the order of clips | ✅ Frame-accurate, including in-points |
| Video, photo and audio tracks | ✅ Main track plus overlay and audio tracks |
| Clip speed (constant) | ✅ Retimed clips |
| Volume, muted tracks, hidden clips | ✅ In dB, muted or disabled |
| Audio fade in / fade out | ✅ Fades on the clip |
| Transitions on the main track | ✅ As cross dissolves |
| Position, scale, rotation, opacity | ✅ Resolve and Final Cut (Premiere: scale and opacity) |
| Zoom and pan keyframes (Ken Burns) | ✅ Resolve and Final Cut |
| Texts and auto captions | ✅ As .srt subtitle files |
| Effects, filters, stickers, masks, animations, crop | ❌ Not available outside CapCut — listed after converting |
Tips after importing
- The project uses your CapCut resolution and frame rate, including vertical 9:16.
- Missing media? Select the clips and choose File → Relink Files….
- Captions: also download the .srt and import it with File → Import → Captions….
- Photos come in as clips by default. Prefer Final Cut's own still-image handling? Choose Photos: as stills under Advanced.
Where is my CapCut project?
CapCut keeps every project in its own folder. Close CapCut first, so the project file is up to date, then open:
- Windows:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\CapCut\User Data\Projects\com.lveditor.draft
Paste it into the File Explorer address bar and press Enter. - Mac:
~/Movies/CapCut/User Data/Projects/com.lveditor.draft
In Finder press ⇧⌘G, paste the path and press Return.
Inside you see one folder per project, usually named after it. Drag that whole folder onto the box above — only its small
project files (draft_content.json or draft_info.json, plus draft_meta_info.json) are read;
your videos are not opened or copied. If you changed where CapCut saves drafts, look in CapCut's settings for the drafts location.
What can't be converted
- Effects, filters, stickers, masks and in/out animations are CapCut's own and have no equivalent in other editors. The tool lists exactly what was left out, so you know what to rebuild.
- Text styling: texts and captions come over as subtitle files (.srt) with their timing, not with CapCut's fonts and effects.
- Mobile and web projects: only projects from CapCut for Windows and Mac can be read; the phone app and CapCut Online store projects differently.
- Encrypted projects: projects made from CapCut's template library and projects from JianYing 6 or newer are encrypted. The tool tells you when that's the case; it does not try to break the encryption.
- Library music and text-to-speech live in CapCut's cache; they only link on the computer where CapCut is installed.
Private by design
Everything happens in your browser. The project file is read on your computer, and your footage is never uploaded — the downloaded timeline simply points to the files where they already are.
Free Forever Converter is not affiliated with ByteDance (CapCut), Blackmagic Design (DaVinci Resolve), Adobe (Premiere Pro) or Apple (Final Cut Pro).
Frequently asked questions
Can Final Cut Pro open CapCut projects?
Not directly. Convert the project to FCPXML here and import it with File → Import → XML.
Which Final Cut Pro version do I need?
Final Cut Pro 10.5 or newer, which reads FCPXML 1.9.
Do overlay tracks become connected clips?
Yes. The main CapCut track becomes the primary storyline; overlays and audio become connected clips.
Is the same file usable in DaVinci Resolve?
Yes. DaVinci Resolve imports the same FCPXML; see CapCut to DaVinci Resolve for its import steps.
Are my videos uploaded?
No. Only the small CapCut project file is read, in your browser. Your footage stays where it is; the timeline you download points to it.
Which CapCut versions work?
CapCut for Windows and Mac (desktop), including recent 8.x versions with several timelines. Projects from the mobile app, CapCut Online, templates and JianYing 6+ cannot be read.
Why are some clips offline after importing?
The editor could not find the files at the saved location — for example because they moved, or because CapCut stored them inside the project folder. Relink them to the folder with your footage, or enter the folder under Media locations before downloading.
