ChatGPT Export to Word

Convert your whole ChatGPT history — or just the chats you pick — from the official data export into clean Word documents.

Drop your ChatGPT or Claude export here The export .zip, or the conversations.json inside it

How to convert your ChatGPT export to Word

  1. Request the export. In ChatGPT, open Settings → Data controls → Export data and confirm. OpenAI emails you a download link, usually within minutes (it can take longer for big histories).
  2. Download the .zip from that email. You don't need to unzip it.
  3. Drop the .zip here. All conversations appear in a list, newest first.
  4. Pick chats — search by title, tick the ones you want, or select all.
  5. Choose one Word file per chat (downloaded as a .zip) or all in one Word file, and click Download Word.

Why convert the export?

The export contains everything you ever asked ChatGPT, but in a form that is hard to use: a huge conversations.json file meant for computers, and a chat.html page that is slow and impossible to edit. Word documents can be searched, edited, printed, shared and archived — handy for backing up your chats, keeping research and study notes, handing in AI-assisted work with its source conversation, or moving to another assistant without losing your history.

What you get in each document

Images you uploaded or generated are shown as an [image] placeholder; the files themselves are in the export's folders.

Claude exports work too

Claude (by Anthropic) also offers a data export under Settings → Privacy → Export data. Its conversations.json has a different structure, but you can drop it here in the same way — the turns are labelled You and Claude. For single answers, use Claude to Word.

Large histories

Thousands of chats are no problem to list and search. Converting them all at once takes a while — roughly a few chats per second, depending on their length and your device. Keep the tab open until the .zip downloads. Only want one answer? Copy it and use ChatGPT to Word instead; for formulas, see how to copy ChatGPT math to Word.

Private by design

Your export contains your entire chat history, so it should not be uploaded to a stranger's server. Here the .zip is opened and converted inside your browser; nothing is sent anywhere. You can check by switching on airplane mode after the page has loaded.

Frequently asked questions

How do I export my ChatGPT history?

In ChatGPT go to Settings, Data controls, Export data, and confirm. You receive an email with a link to a .zip file containing all your conversations.

Do I need to unzip the export?

No. Drop the .zip file as it is. You can also drop the conversations.json file from inside it.

Can I convert only some conversations?

Yes. Search by title, tick the chats you want and download only those, either as separate Word files or as one document.

Are equations and code kept?

Yes. LaTeX math becomes real Word equations, and code blocks keep a monospace font with syntax colours.

Does it work with a Claude export?

Yes. Claude's conversations.json is recognised automatically and the turns are labelled You and Claude.

Is my chat history uploaded?

No. The export is read and converted entirely in your browser and never leaves your device.

Runs entirely in your browser, powered by fflate, marked, docx and a LaTeX-to-Word equation converter built for this site. Updated October 2026.
