How to Copy ChatGPT Math to Word

Formulas from ChatGPT turn into code like \frac{a}{b} when you paste them into Word. Here is how to get real Word equations — the fast way and the manual way.

Why ChatGPT math breaks in Word

ChatGPT doesn't write formulas as pictures or Word equations. It writes them in LaTeX, a text code for math, and the chat window renders that code nicely on screen. When you copy the answer, you get the code — or, depending on the browser, a mix of half-rendered characters. Word doesn't understand either, so you end up with something like:

\[ x = \frac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a} \]

instead of a neat fraction with a square root. You'll recognise ChatGPT math by these delimiters:

Method 1: convert the whole answer at once (fastest)

  1. In ChatGPT, click the copy icon under the answer.
  2. Paste it into the box at the top of this page. The preview shows every formula rendered.
  3. Click Download Word (.docx).

Every formula becomes a native Word equation — the same kind you get with Insert → Equation — so you can click it, edit it and change its size. Headings, tables, lists and code blocks in the answer come along too. This is the method to use for homework, lab reports, lecture notes and anything with more than one or two formulas.

Method 2: Word's own LaTeX input (one formula at a time)

Microsoft 365 versions of Word can read LaTeX themselves, one equation at a time:

  1. In Word, press Alt + = (or Insert → Equation).
  2. On the Equation tab, in the Conversions group, switch the input format from Unicode to LaTeX.
  3. Paste the formula without the \[ \] or $$ delimiters.
  4. Click Convert → Current – Professional.

This works well for a single formula, but it's slow for a full answer: you have to find, strip and convert every equation by hand, and the text around it still needs its formatting fixed. Older Word versions (2016 and earlier) don't have the LaTeX option.

Method 3: ask ChatGPT for a different format

You can ask ChatGPT to "write the formulas in plain text without LaTeX". You'll get things like x = (-b ± √(b² − 4ac)) / (2a). That pastes cleanly, but it's harder to read, isn't a real equation, and breaks down for anything with fractions inside fractions, sums or integrals. Asking for "Word equations" or "MathML" doesn't help either: ChatGPT can only output text.

Which method should I use?

SituationBest method
A full answer with several formulas, tables or stepsMethod 1 — converter
One formula to add to an existing documentMethod 2 — Word's LaTeX input (or method 1 and copy the equation over)
A quick chat message or emailMethod 3 — plain-text formulas

What the converter handles

Prices such as "$5 and $10" stay normal text — they aren't mistaken for math.

Troubleshooting

For developers: the converter as a library

The LaTeX-to-Word engine behind this page is open source. Building .docx files in JavaScript with the docx library? Install latex-to-docx (MIT licence) and turn LaTeX into native Word equations with one function call. Source code and issues are on GitHub.

Also for Claude and Gemini

Claude and Gemini write math the same way, so this works for their answers too. See ChatGPT to Word for all features, Claude to Word, Gemini to Word, or save the answer with formulas as a PDF via ChatGPT to PDF.

Frequently asked questions

How do I copy an equation from ChatGPT to Word?

Copy the answer with ChatGPT's copy button, paste it into the converter on this page and download the Word file. Every formula becomes an editable Word equation.

Why does ChatGPT math show as code in Word?

ChatGPT writes formulas in LaTeX, a text code for math. Word does not read LaTeX when you paste, so the code itself appears.

Can Word convert LaTeX by itself?

Microsoft 365 Word can, one equation at a time: insert an equation, switch the input to LaTeX, paste the formula without delimiters and choose Convert, Professional.

Are the equations editable in Word?

Yes. They are native Word equations, the same as Insert, Equation, so you can edit, resize and restyle them.

Does it work in Google Docs?

Yes. Open the downloaded .docx in Google Docs and the equations become Google Docs equations.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser; your text never leaves your device.

Runs entirely in your browser, powered by marked, docx and a LaTeX-to-Word equation converter built for this site. Updated October 2026.
