Frequently asked questions

Are my 3D scans uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser on your own device. Your files never leave your computer.

How big can the file be?

Up to 1.5 GB, depending on your device's memory. A desktop browser with 16 GB of RAM handles scenes of several million splats. Close other tabs if a very large file fails.

Is the conversion lossless?

Converting to PLY keeps everything. SPZ, SOG and compressed PLY are lossy compressions designed to look nearly identical; .splat drops spherical harmonics. Keep your original PLY if you may want to edit or re-train later.

Why is SOG conversion slow?

SOG compression clusters millions of values. With WebGPU (Chrome, Edge and recent Safari) it runs on your graphics card and takes seconds; without it, it runs on the CPU and can take several minutes for big scenes.

What powers this converter?

It uses the open-source splat-transform library by PlayCanvas (MIT licence), running entirely in your browser.
