How to convert a Markdown table to Excel
- Paste your Markdown into the box. It can contain other text too; only the tables are used.
- Check the tables found on the right.
- Click Download Excel (.xlsx), or CSV.
Supported table syntax
GitHub-flavoured Markdown tables: a header row, a separator row of dashes, and data rows, with or without the outer pipes.
| Name | Score |
|:------|------:|
| Ann | 9.5 |
| Bob | 7 |
Alignment colons are accepted, **bold**, `code` and links are reduced to their text, and <br> becomes a line break inside the cell.
Numbers stay numbers
Cells such as 1,250, 3.75, 15% or $9.99 become numeric values with a matching format, so you can sort, sum and chart them straight away. Leading zeros (007), long IDs and dates stay text. Untick Convert numbers to keep everything as text.
Good for
- Tables in a GitHub
README.mdor wiki you need to analyse. - Notes from Obsidian, Notion exports, Joplin or Typora.
- Tables generated by ChatGPT and other AI assistants (see ChatGPT to Excel).
- Going the other way? CSV to JSON handles data files, and Markdown to Word whole documents.
Private by design
The spreadsheet is built in your browser. Your data is never uploaded — fine for budgets, salaries and customer lists.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert several Markdown tables at once?
Yes. Every table in the text becomes its own sheet, or all of them go on one sheet if you choose that.
Do I need the outer pipes?
No. Tables with or without leading and trailing pipes are recognised.
Are numbers converted?
Yes. Numbers, percentages and currency amounts become real values; untick Convert numbers to keep them as text.
Is my data uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser.
