Step 1: request the export
- Open chatgpt.com and sign in.
- Click your profile picture or name, then Settings.
- Go to Data controls and click Export next to Export data.
- Click Confirm export.
In the ChatGPT app on iPhone or Android the option is in the same place: Settings → Data Controls → Export Data.
Using ChatGPT through work (Team, Enterprise or Edu)? Exporting may be switched off or handled by your administrator; ask them if you don't see the option.
Step 2: download the .zip from the email
OpenAI sends an email titled along the lines of "Your ChatGPT data export is ready". That usually takes a few minutes, but can take longer for a big history. The download link expires after 24 hours — request a new export if you miss it.
Step 3: what is inside the export?
chat.html— all conversations on one web page. Double-click to open it in your browser.conversations.json— the same chats as structured data, meant for programs.- A few smaller files about your account and feedback, plus folders with images you uploaded or generated.
For a few chats, chat.html is fine. With hundreds of conversations it becomes one enormous, slow page that you
can't search well, edit or print in parts.
Step 4: turn the export into documents
