How to convert AVIF to JPG
- Drop your .avif files into the box.
- JPG is selected; switch to PNG if the image has a transparent background.
- Download the converted files one by one or as a .zip.
What is an AVIF file?
AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It is even smaller than WebP, so more and more websites, CDNs and Netflix-style services use it. The downside: when you save an image from such a site you get an .avif file that Windows Photos, older Photoshop versions, Word, many upload forms and print shops cannot open.
JPG or PNG?
- JPG — best for photos; opens everywhere and stays reasonably small.
- PNG — choose it when the AVIF has transparency (logos, cut-outs) or when you plan to edit the image further.
Why the JPG is bigger than the AVIF
AVIF compresses roughly twice as efficiently as JPG, so the same picture simply needs more bytes as a JPG. If you need a smaller file afterwards, use Compress Image or Resize Image.
Which browsers can decode AVIF?
The conversion uses your browser's own AVIF decoder: current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari (iOS 16 / macOS Ventura and later) all have one. Your images are never uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
How do I open an AVIF file on Windows?
Convert it to JPG on this page; the JPG opens in Photos, Paint, Word and every other app.
Does AVIF to JPG lose quality?
JPG is re-compressed, but at quality 90 the result looks the same as the AVIF.
What happens to transparency?
JPG cannot store it, so transparent areas turn white. Choose PNG to keep transparency.
Can I convert several AVIF files at once?
Yes, up to 50 files, downloaded together as a .zip.
Are my images uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser on your own device.
