Why WebP images cause trouble

Most websites now serve images as WebP because it is small and fast. But when you save such an image, older software often cannot open it: Windows Photo Viewer, older Photoshop versions, many print services, Office on some systems and plenty of upload forms. PNG opens everywhere.

WebP to PNG or WebP to JPG?

Does the transparent background survive?

Yes. WebP's alpha channel is copied into the PNG pixel for pixel, including soft, semi-transparent edges, so the image can be placed on any background.

Animated WebP

PNG is a still-image format, so an animated WebP is converted to a PNG of its first frame. To keep the animation, keep the file as WebP.

Private by design

Decoding and encoding happen in your browser with its built-in codecs. Your images are never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Does WebP to PNG keep the transparent background?

Yes. Transparency, including soft semi-transparent edges, is copied exactly into the PNG.

Is there any quality loss?

No additional loss: the PNG stores the decoded WebP pixels exactly. If the WebP itself was lossy, its existing artefacts remain.

Why is the PNG larger than the WebP?

WebP is one of the most efficient image formats; lossless PNG is not. A PNG two to five times larger than the WebP is normal.

How do I save a WebP image from a website as PNG?

Right-click the image, choose Save image as, then drop the saved .webp file here and download the PNG.

Can I convert animated WebP files?

Yes, but PNG is a still format, so you get the first frame of the animation.
